RAM Structural System Ideas

Welcome to the RAM Structural System Ideas portal. The purpose of this site is to post ideas for enhancements and new features. We value your feedback and our team regularly reviews your suggestions for consideration in future releases.

You have 3 options for providing feedback:

  1. Vote for an existing Idea. The popularity of an Idea helps us understand its importance to our users.

  2. Comment on an existing Idea. We want to hear your unique point of view.

  3. Add a new Idea. If no existing Idea describes what you would like, add a new one!

When you Vote, Comment, or Add an idea you will also be subscribed to that Idea and will receive status updates. Please note that we may merge or rename Ideas for clarity. Thank you for your support and feedback, it is always appreciated!

Column connection eccentricities

I would like the column connection eccentricity use the actual column geometry to consider whether the centerline of the beam strikes the web or the flange of the column. Currently, RAM allows you to specify an angle to "split" the reaction, but this doesn't make much sense.

For example, say a beam frames 20 degrees off the strong axis of the column and your split tolerance is 30 degrees. RAM will apply full strong axis eccentric moment to the strong axis but no weak axis eccentric moment. This is correct if the beam is fabricated to frame into the column flange centerline rather than the overall column centerline. Maybe engineers want to do this, but what a pain to coordinate in Revit.

Once you do exceed the split tolerance, the moment due to eccentricity is reduced, which makes no sense at all. I don't know what that would mean in terms of actual geometry to validate that assumption.

Instead of splitting with specified angles, we should be basing moments on actual column geometry, ideally with a tolerance to ensure the connection can actually clear the flange and frame directly into the column web.

Furthermore, improve the connection eccentricity settings for rectangular HSS. We should be able to set b/2 for the weak axis connection.
